About AxeKit

Hey there, I’ve been playing guitar and bass for more than 50 years. When I retired from my career job, I decided to do more that just play guitar. I wanted to build one!

Now, I’m not much of a woodworker and creating a guitar from a couple of pieces of lumber was way beyond my capabilities. But I found a kit here locally that intrigued me, so I picked it up. A few weeks later, I had a nice cool Jazz-style bass guitar, just like the one I had back in the 1970s. Okay, it wasn’t just like it, but it looked great and it played great. Besides that, it was a lot of fun to build.

Then I picked up a PRS-style kit. It was a little more challenging, with a flamed maple top and a set neck. It turned out great as well, so I got another. And then another. Each time, looking for something new and different to try. I’ve learned a lot not only about building them, but about setting them up and fine-tuning how they play.

I’m not a professional luthier, and I don’t have a lot of fancy tools. You probably don’t either, and they really aren’t necessary. You can do a lot with what you have, and if needed, pick up a few inexpensive tools at the hardware store. Maybe even make some specialty tools for yourself.

So that’s what we are about here. We want to help you find just the right DIY electric guitar kit, get it built, and enjoy playing your own custom instrument. And we hope you have so much fun that you decide to do it again. And again. And again.
